This is what happens when you have yarn that’s just so perfect, you have to pick a pattern that does justice to it and shows it to its best effect. I am paralyzed. I have a bunch of madelinetosh in my stash, and want to make something really beautiful. I’m thinking of the Daybreak shawl, which has been made 43 times with madtosh sock. (Sorry for the ravelry links, if you’re not on rav. If not, why?!)
So I have 3 skeins of tosh merino light, in filigree, and my new skein of eyre light in jodhpur, but I don’t know how well they’d go together. Since I have 3 of the filigree and one of the jodhpur, I’m thinking the green would be the main color. What do you think, seriously?
I just can’t decide. I really ought to swatch them together. That’s the only way to answer this. Still, if the combo strikes you in some way – great or awful – please say so! I’m just as interested in the bad as the good.

The Filigree is absolutely stunning! One thing that I noticed about the Daybreak pattern is that I like it best if there isn’t any overlap between the two colors used. I can’t really tell (probably couldn’t even if I were looking at the real thing) but I suspect those might blend together visually in some areas. Of course you may not mind that. Mine (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/KnitterlyAnne/daybreak) is an example of one that does do some blending and I wish it wouldn’t. Also, at least for the medium size, you end up using fairly similar amounts of the two colors.
Have you looked at his Herbivore? It’s lots of fun too, and I think it would look great in the Filigree. It’s worth swatching some stripes, though, just to see what you do get. I can see why you want the perfect pattern for these!

ooh, Anne – your Daybreak is really beautiful, but I do see what you mean. I really love the part where the yellow contrasts with the main color. It’s more striking than the part where the colors are closer in family. hmm. You raise a really good point. My biggest concern was that the filigree is luminous, and the jodhpur is kind of matte. I was afraid that contrast would make the jodhpur look clunky, and not give it its best presentation.
I have 3 skeins of filigree, so i also don’t want to make something that’ll use up just enough filigree to leave me with too little to do something else more involved than a hat. SUCH PRESSURE!
Both totally gorgeous, I have yarn envy
. Hmm…I would test swatch to check the color combo. Just looking at the photos, I think the greens & sort of rust color in Filigree don’t quite balance the creamy coral shade of Jodhpur. Jodhpur looks like it would go well with a bright jade or malachite family of greens, and Filigree is too much like chalcopyrite – a rainbow of irridescent metals.

I agree with you – this is why I wanted people to respond, you hit the specific I was wondering about myself. Filigree has shades that are kind of similar to jodhpur but wrong enough to miss the boat. But that filigree is just so gorgeous, isn’t it. I have yarn envy of myself.
There is something iridescent about it.
OK – 2 for 2, I feel more confident. I think I will go ahead and swatch, just to be extra sure (plus I’m dying to work with the yarns for a few minutes), but i’ll be on the lookout for something different to do with these, because i think this won’t be it.
Thanks, perches & Anne, for the feedback!
Hey Lori! Honestly, I don’t think they work together…the Jodphur has almost pastel qualities, while the Filigree is totally saturated.
If you’re convinced that you want a Daybreak, I do have a skein of TML Antler in stash that I could sell (or trade for a skein of Filigree!) that might work well with it.
But I totally understand how you feel about finding just the right project and one that maximizes the yarn you have! I spend way too many of my brain cells obsessing over yarn + pattern combos!
I completely agree – I’d been seeing jodhpur as a kind of matte finish, but you’re right….it is kind of pastel. You’re very good at yarn and pattern combos, especially where madelinetosh is concerned!
Let me think about that Antler; it could be gorgeous with the Filigree! I’ll rav email you about it if I want to head that way. For now, though, I know this combo won’t work to show off both yarns. Back to rav!
